IPDM Lab Construction to begin

SIRDI SIGNS DIRECT LABOUR SERVICES CONTRACT WITH DE’MARS’ STONE COMPANY LIMITED FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF AN INTEGRATED PEST AND DISEASE MANAGEMENT (IPDM) LABORATORY FOR THE BELIZE SUGAR INDUSTRY

With the assistance of the European Union, the Government of Belize, Sugar Industry Stakeholders and the Sugar Industry Research and Development Institute, the project entitled “Strengthening of Integrated Pest and Disease Management in the Sugar Industry” has finalize its procurement process for direct labour service with De’Mars’ Stone Company Ltd.

The IPDM laboratory will be a first of its kind Entomology and Pathology laboratory facility within Belize with the required human resources, equipment and supplies for the production of biological control agents (metarhizium anisopliae) which is a critical component of the IPDM system. The lab is scheduled to initiate construction on October 16, 2017. When operational the lab will use an approach that carefully and intelligently selects and uses pest control actions which will ensure the safeguarding of economic, ecological and sociological consequences. The various formulation of metarhizium bio-pesticide will be accessible to farmers in the sugar industry at a competitive cost to secure the viability of the sugar industry.

The major objectives are:

  • 1.) To incorporation of an Integrated Pest and Disease Management program which is based on ecological principles, considering the agro-system as a whole.
  • 2.) To complement and reinforce what farmers have been practicing in their fields. These practices include the on-time application of mechanical, cultural and biological control methods
  • 3.) Future pest control such as parasitic wasps and stem borer, just to name a few.
  • 4.) To reduce the use of chemical control interventions that are harmful to human health and the environment.
